JOHOR BARU: Police have discovered a new technique of packaging drugs to look like sweets, being used by a drug syndicate in Johor.
State police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the tactic was used by a syndicate known as ‘Halim Gang’ in an attempt to sneak in cannabis in the form of sweets to a remand detention centre.
He said this was the first time such tactic which has been widely used by international drug syndicates was detected in the state.
“Once the detainees get hold of the ‘sweets’, they would swallow and defecate them before distributing the drugs in the centre,” he told reporters at the Johor police contingent headquarters here, yesterday.
Ayob Khan said the gang which was has been active since 2019, was believed to have gotten their drugs supply from Kuala Lumpur adding that the drugs would also be smuggled to Indonesia via the Johor west coast area.
“We have arrested 23 suspects believed to have been involved with the syndicate in 22 separate raids in Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, Pontian and Kota Tinggi, conducted from Aug 11 until Monday.
“They comprise 17 local men, four local women, an Indonesian woman and a Vietnamese woman, aged between 31 and 50,” he said.
Ayob Khan said 19 of the suspects were tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine, while 20 others have previous criminal and drugs records.
He said police also seized 14.037kg of cannabis, 6.84kg of heroin, 1.58kg of syabu, 44.31 gramme of ketamine and 400 Yaba pills.
“We also seized were jewellery, 22 cars and motorcycles, cash, a Revolver with nine live bullets,” he said adding that the total value of items seized was RM728,146.98.
All suspects were remanded for 14 days from yesterday for further investigations under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Immigration Act 1959/63, Firearms Act (Increased Penalties) 1971 and Firearms Act 1960. — Bernama
