JOHOR BAHRU: Police seized 2,593 packs and 692 cartons of contraband cigarettes estimated at RM9.37 million during a raid on 29 grocery stores around Johor Bahru from Aug 1 to 25.
Johor Baru South district police chief ACP Mohd Padzli Mohd Zain said during the operation, police detained 33 individuals aged between 20 and 60, believed to be involved in the smuggling and distribution of the cigarettes.
“The modus operandi was to use the grocery stores as a cover to sell the smuggled goods. A Proton Wira and a Perodua Myvi were also seized,” he said in a statement here today.
He said the cigarettes which were of various brands were sold at between RM4.50 and RM9.50 per pack, adding that the suspects were arrested under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967. -Bernama
