ALOR STAR: The Kedah government has given an assurance that water supply to domestic users would not be affected by the decreasing water levels of several major dams, saying it can sustain the supply until June.
State Works, Water Supply and Energy Resources Committee chairman Zamri Yusof said despite the decline, the water levels of the Pedu and Ahning Dams were still high, while the Muda and Beris Dams recorded a low percentage of water levels.
“Our water priority is more to domestic needs as water for agriculture, especially paddy, has been reduced since last December and we will look at the subsequent needs in March and April.
“At present, the reservoirs at the Pedu and Ahning dams are still at healthy levels but those of Muda and Beris dams are relatively low. That’s why we reminded consumers to be prudent so that the domestic needs are not affected...Insya Allah (God willing) we still have enough until June,“ he told a press conference on the water situation in Kedah here yesterday.
National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Charles Santiago was also present.
Commenting further, Zamri noted that the Penang government had also reduced its extraction of water from Sungai Muda at the request of the Kedah government.
“As a result of discussions (previously), Penang, which pumps water from Sungai Muda, has reduced its intake and this allows us to pull through with the water supply from the dam for the benefit of the people in the state,” he said.
Zamri noted that the water levels of the Muda Dam had dropped to 8.80 per cent, Pedu Dam 41.22% and Ahning Dam 59.10%.
According to him, the declining water levels had so far affected water supply to 3,700 user accounts in several areas, especially in Merbok, Gurun and Kuala Kedah. — Bernama
