Batu Dance Theatre celebrates 20th anniversary

THE dance production FLY: Dancing in the arms of Peninsular Malaysia was created in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Batu Dance Theatre, which will be held from Feb 14 to 16 at The Platform, Menara KEN TTDI.

It was his love for our homeland that inspired artistic director Vincent Tan Lian Ho to fuse the beautiful landscape of Malaysia into the dance.

Through uniting both traditional and contemporary dance forms, as well as utilising 20 years of Batu’s classic repertoire movement concepts, a brand new dance production was created to inspire future generations.

“I’ve included various forms of dance and interdisciplinary forms of performances in the production, each with their own unique features,” says Tan.

The dance production combines video projections of the landscape of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as percussion and gamelan music, violin performances and many other elements to add excitement and inspiration.

“In this two-hour-long dance production, I will bring out the three elements of the sky, the earth, and the people using different dance genres,” says Tan.

There are three scenes with nine dances in FLY: Dancing in the arms of Peninsular Malaysia, and they are The Horizon, The Forest and The Homeland respectively. Each scene will be formed around three to four dances.

The waves, forests, falling leaves, hornbill, hibiscus and many more of Malaysia’s special features will be presented to highlight the nostalgic atmosphere.
