KUCHING: Sixteen foreign visitors have been denied entry into Sarawak since the state government instituted new restrictions on Saturday to prevent a Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in the state.
They comprised of 13 Chinese nationals, an Indonesian and two Hongkong residents, said a brief statement from the Immigration Department, which was made available to the press by the state government’s public communications unit.
Those denied entry had been to China for the past 14 days. The novel coronavirus, also known as 2019-nCov, had originated from Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province.
The figure is out of the 519 visitors – including Malaysian – who were referred to Ministry of Health’s medical screening counters after they arrived in the state.
Of the 16 stopped from entering Sarawak, fourteen people were denied entry at Kuching International Airport, while one each was barred at Miri Airport and Mulu Airport.
There are so far eight confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection in the country but none are in Sarawak.
On Saturday, the state disaster management committee said Chinese nationals and foreigners, with the exception of students, who have been to China in the last 14 days will be refused entry into Sarawak until further notice.
Exception are given to those who have Employment Passes, Student Passes or Long Social Passes but they must undergo compulsory self-quarantine at home for 14 days.
Sarawakians returning from China in the last 14 days must also undergo compulsory self-quarantine at home for 14 days.
Chinese nationals who are already in Sarawak are advised to report to the Chinese Consulate of their whereabouts and places of stay in Sarawak. — TheBorneoPost
